Chatham Road South with Princess Margaret Road and will be about 1,000 ft. long. It will be 50 ft. wide and will be erected by using precast prestressed concrete beams and employing precasting techniques for as many other elements as possible in order to minimise interference to traffic during the construction.

The work on site for the two flyovers is expected to start towards the end of this year. The new flyover on Hong Kong Island will take about two years to complete while the one in Kowloon is expected to be completed early in 1969.

The consulting engineers for the two projects are Scott Wilson, Kirkpatrick and Partners, Hong Kong and Freeman. Fox, Wilbur, Smith and Associates, London.

BUILDING PLANS APPROVED

THE Building Authority approved 20 new building plans of all types in Hongkong, Kowloon and the New Terri- tories in July, compared with 30 in June. In the same period, newly completed buildings certified for occupation numbered 61, a drop of five compared with the total in the preceding month. Of these new buildings, nine were for domestic purposes, 14 for non-domestic purposes, and 38 for combined domestic and non-domestic use. In ad- dition, the Building Authority approved the demolition of six buildings.

Cost of new building work in the Colony in the month of July amounted to HK$87,053,412, while a total of HK$7,167.337 was spent on site formation work. In the same period there were 161 new buildings of all types erected. This total includes 12 factories and godowns, two offices and shops. 142 houses and flats and five other buildings of mixed accommodation.

CONTRACTS

WORK is about to start on the second and final stage of the building programme for the Wong Chuk Hang low- cost housing estate, west of the Police Training School, Aberdeen, Hong Kong. The Government has accepted a tender of HK$21,847.475 from Goodman Corporation (E & B) Ltd. for the construction of eight domestic blocks

four of 20 storeys and the rest of 12 storeys.

These blocks will provide accommodation for about 31.800 people. Included in the contract are two 24- classroom primary schools for children living in the estate.

Bridgestone Tire Co. Ltd., Japan, are to set up a new auto-tyre plant in Thailand. Clearance of a site of 19,000 sq. metres is now under way and the plant is scheduled to go into operation by the end of 1968. The construc- tion contract, reported to be worth over US$6 million, has been let to Ohbayashi-Gumi, Ltd.. Tokyo.

This recently completed 19-storey block is the tallest in Singapore's new Toa Payoh Estate. It contains 228 three-room apartments which will be sold at $$7,500 each under the Government's "home ownership for the people" scheme. Three more multi-storey blocks providing a further 1,136 units are nearing completion on the estate.

AN order worth $$11.3 million has been won by Hume Industries (Far East) Ltd.. Singapore, for the supply of 13,000 tons of asphalt lined steel pipes for a 29-mile water scheme in Lusaka, Zambia. It is the largest export order ever received by a Singapore industrial firm.

The company also received orders last month from Pakistan and Thailand for asbestos cement pipes and cast iron fittings. These orders were worth $$1.6 million. The Pakistan order is for 60 miles of piping for the Chit- tagong and Dacca Water and Sewerage Authorities.
