BLACK CHROME TAPS
A range of bathroom and kitchen fittings with a 'black chrome' finish is being marketed by F.H. Bourner and Co. (Engineers) Ltd., Crawley, Sussex, UK.
The finish is achieved by the Duramir black chrome process de- veloped by the Diamond Shamrock Corp. of USA. It is said to be highly corrosion and wear resistant and able to withstand variations in temperature up to 480 degrees C without effect.
Included in the new range are: a sink mixer designed for the kitchen on 7 in. centres and with dual flow outlet; deck bath mixer on 7-1/8 in. centres; pillar mixer for the bath on 7-1/8 in. centres for mounting on the bath or on the wall; mixer for hand-basin de- signed on 4 in. centres and offering

either dual-flow or single-flow opera- tion; basin set with 8in. centres, three- hole fitting offering a choice of chain or 'pop-up' waste assembly; bath panel set for concealed fixing, wall-mounted; bidet set; and shower mixer, concealed fixing, consisting of blending valve, shower arm and rose.
LASER DEVICE
-
A laser projector the first of a new generation of low-cost laser in- struments with a wide range of appli cations in civil engineering, mining and pipelaying has been developed by Elliott Automation Radar Systems Ltd., Airport Works, Rochester, Kent, UK.
Called Laserline, the portable, battery-operated device projects a narrow beam of red light which can be picked up by a reflector, even in sun- light, at up to 500 yd. Once set up on its tripod using a telescopic sight, the device and be left unmanned and the beam detected at any point at which work is in progress.
The beam, which contains a 1mW (one milliwatt) helium light source, forms an accurate reference line for laying pipes at precise gradients, con- structing buildings and observing movements in tunnels and mining galleries. Precise planes can be defined for excavating and laying roadways and runways.
Safe and simple to use, the Laser- line weighs 151b. 6oz without tripod.
SMOKE DETECTOR
On the lid of the control unit a key-operated selector switch operates 'test', 'off' and 'normal' positions, and below it three lights indicate 'test', 'mains on' and 'alarm' conditions. When the selector switch is turned to 'normal', any alarm signal transmitted by a detector will bring the alarm light into operation and cause one set of relay contacts to activate remote alarm bells or fire extinguishing equipment.
With the switch turned to 'test', the output contacts are taken out of circuit so that only the test light is illuminated.
The makers are Photain Controls Ltd., Randalls Road, Leatherhead, Surrey, UK.
WASHBASINS
Two vitreous-china washbasins, the Leonora and the International, have been introduced by Twyfords Ltd., PO Box 23, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs. for fit- ting into cloakrooms or bathrooms.
Warning of a fire within seconds of its outbreak is ensured by the PID-B ionisation smoke detector. A single Leonora basin unit is said to protect an enclosed area of up to 10,000 sq.ft.
The detector, measuring 3 in. in diameter and designed for either wall or ceiling mounting, is connected to either a wall-or panel-mounted con- trol unit housed in a pressed steel casing measuring 9in. long by 6in. high by 4in. deep. Up to 50 detectors may be linked to one control unit on a single, twin-wire circuit.
The unit has two chambers ionised by a radioactive material, the inner

one being sealed from the atmosphere. Should smoke or cumbustible gases enter the outer chamber, the voltage ratio between the two chambers changes, producing a signal which passes to the control unit.
International basin
Both are fitted with column taps and come in white, pink, yellow, blue, turquoise or beige versions.
The Leonora top features a self- rimming edge, 5/8 in. deep, which eli- minates the need for a metal surround by fitting snugly over the table top so that no dirt can gather underneath it. Narrower at the back than at its curv ed front edge, the basin measures 1ft. 10 in. wide by 1 ft. 4 in. from back to front and is 6in. deep.
Also self-rimming, the rectangular International basin has a 4in. deep flange which extends downwards from its slightly curved front edge to fit over the front edge of a counter top.
