XPENSIVE fittings and a number of modern refinements such as garbage disposal chutes are incorpor- ated in the Arcadia Building, a new block of luxury apartments recently completed in Taipei.

Sited on high ground at 400 Tun Hua South Road, the block is 11- storeys high with a further two floors below ground. It is the tallest build- ing in this residential district of the city.

Reinforced concrete construction is used for the frame and walls of the structure. The site soil is of poor bearing quality prohibiting

the usual friction piling method. A mat footing is used so that the building will settle uniformly.

Ceiling height of the apartments is 3.1 metres. The basements have a height of 3 metres and the ground floor, which is taken up with shops and stores, has a height of 3.5 metres. Each residential floor contains three apartments, which have floor areas of 189, 204 and 318 square metres respectively.

Each apartment has three or four bedrooms, sitting room, dining room, three bath and toilet rooms, kitchen, pantry, storage room, ser- vants' quarters and utility room.
