ASIAN TRADE FAIR

Contractors' plant and building equipment and materials feature prominently in almost all the national pavilions at the Asian Trade Fair in Bangkok (Nov. 17 - Dec. 12). Local companies too display items for which they hold the agencies and the fair holds what is probably the largest ever presentation of construction equipment to be seen in South East Asia. A selection from the wide range on view is listed on these pages, under the country of manufacture

AUSTRALIA

Air curtain

An air curtain is installed above the entrances to the Australian pavilion to keep the conditioned air in and heat and dust out. A protective screen of air is blown across the full width of the opening.

These units are built into the struc- ture so that they are not immediately evident. They are said to be able to maintain temperature differences of up to 85 degrees on either side of the curtain.

They operate on a normal power supply and there are units to suit small cold stores and large industrial premises.

Two rollers are exhibited by Pacific- Ace Equipment Co. the 33TC 11- wheel pneumatic-tyred road roller and the V-3-E drawn vibrating roller. The 33TC weighs 35,000 lb. fully ballasted and has an 83in. rolling width. Independent oscillation to the front wheels provides for a kneading action and the ballast arrangements allow quick adjustments to wheel loadings. Other features are: dual operating controls, pivotted steering

column, oversize brakes and complete accessibility to the components.

The V-3-E has a static weight of 3,360 lb., a vibrating frequency of 2,200 to 2.400 v.p.m.. and is power- ed by a Deutz twin cylinder air-cooled diesel giving 14 h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. Pacific-Ace Equipment Co.. Salis- bury Road, Hornsby, N.S.W'.

Window fitting

The Whitco window fitting is widely used in South East Asia. It is a com- bination of hinge and stay, which when fitted is concealed in a rebate cut into the sash.

Fittings are made in either electro galvanised steel or solid brass in a range to fit any size or type of win- dow, casement, hopper or french door.

A sliding shoe with a heavy duty flat spring provides the right amount

of friction and holds the window in any position. The fitting is per- manently lubricated and windows swing through an arc of 135 degrees and remain fixed at the required angle.

Axial flow pumps

Ornel Pump Co. specialise in the manufacture of axial flow turbine bore pumps and larger axial flow pumps for irrigation projects. They have pioneered the application of sloping axial flow pumps for installa- tion on large rivers in Australia where flooding can occur up to 40 ft. deep

and where it is desirable to continue pumping regardless of flood condi- tions.

At the fair the firm exhibit a work- ing model showing an electrically driven irrigation pump with irrigation channel and general layout.

Metal cladding

Visitors to the fair will be attracted by the brilliant radiance of the Aus- tralian pavilion. The external walls are covered with gold-coloured metal made by Metal Manufactures Pty. Ltd., Australia's biggest maker of copper and non-ferrous metal pro- ducts.

The facade serves not only an ornamental purpose but also acts as an insulation against tropical heat.

Welder

The engine, a Perkins 3/152 diesel. and the generator are flange mounted on the Lincoln 400AS welder to avoid maintenance arising from belts and flexible couplings.

The machine has dual continuous control which permits infinite varia- tion of arc type and are heat inde- pendently of each other. This feature has most uses on outdoor welding where every arc on critical work can be adjusted precisely to suit the job within the range of 40-400 amps DC.

A smooth, responsive arc is al- ways available because the 400S has
