Exterior
The external appearance of the building expresses quite clearly the major structural units; these are the load bearing mullions and the prestress- ed beams. These units have been faced with white terrazzo and contrast sharp- ly with the dark grey anti-glare glass of the windows. Over the window heads a precast box with an arched soffit forms the sun-breaker, and it is this unit which gives the building its main character both by day and night since each of the sun-breakers contains a yellow floodlight which shines onto the underside of the sunbreaker above. Windows have been kept to a stan- dard design in order to facilitate clean- ing from the inside and outside with- out the erection of expensive cradles, and, of course, even the external ter- razzo can be cleaned quite simply by standing on top of the sun-breakers.
At low level, the problem of keep- ing the building clean has dictated the materials used, and so glass mosaic, toughened glass and stainless steel cladding form the main finishes.
