Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore
Construction has reached eighth floor level on the hotel, which will be called the Shangri-La. When completed the building will have 25 floors, three of them below ground floor level.
A presidential suite will be provided on the 24th floor and there will be 22 smaller suites which, together with all the tower rooms, will com- mand sweeping views of Singapore harbour. The hotel will have a Chinese restaurant, show lounge, continental restaurant, coffee shop and a banquet hall to seat 1,000. In addition there will be a num- ber of small dining rooms for private parties.
Plans also provide for a large swimming pool, and the entire development will be in a garden setting landscaped by Mr. Walter K. Collins of Belt, Collins & Associates, Hawaii.
Principal architect for the scheme is Mr. Heah Hock Heng of the Singapore firm, Seow, Lee and Heah, while the architectural consultant is Mr. Yozo Shibata of the Japan Tourist Facilities Plan- ning & Designing Co., Tokyo. Mr. Shibata is also the architect for Western International's Hotel Dusit Thani now under construction in Bangkok.
Interiors of the hotel are being designed by Bent Severin, the internationally known Danish archi- tect. Other consultants on the project are: H.L. Chan Associates, consulting engineers; Langdon, Every & Seah, quantity surveyors; and Dr. H.C. Huang & Partners, mechanical and electrical con- sultants. The general contractor is Union Construc- tion Co. (Shanghai), Singapore.
History of HK Government's low cost housing
The history and development of Government low cost housing since it started in 1962 is set out in the latest in a series of colour folders on housing, published last month by the Hong Kong Govern- ment Information Service.
The folder points out that until the scheme started there were many families living in insanitary and overcrowded conditions who did not qualify for resettlement and whose income was too low to make them eligible for Housing Authority or Hous-
