Model of completed Miramar Hotel

bringing its total to 730. Phase IV will involve de- molition and rebuilding of part of the Miramar shopping arcade at the corner of Nathan and Kimberley Roads, next to the Plaza Wing which was phase III of the overall expansion scheme.

The new block will form a continuation of the Plaza and blend into it to become one building which will constitute the western arm of the eventual H-shaped complex.

Cost of construction, furnishing and equip- ment for the new extension will be about HK$15 million. Plans are by Eric Cumine & Associates. The building contract is expected to take about eight months.

Macao bridge contract soon

The Portuguese Ministry of Overseas Provinces is expected to place a contract soon for building a 10,500 ft. long prestressed concrete causeway/ bridge to link the mainland with the island of Taipa.

Professor Eng. Edgar Cardoso, of Lisbon, the bridge designer, visited Macao in February and is now making final adjustments to his original plans.

Estimated to cost US$1.8 million, the bridge itself will be 4,050 ft. long and will have twenty- two 82 ft. side spans and two 66 ft. end spans. Its 240 ft. main span will be 90 ft. to 100 ft. above the main navigational channel.

The bridge is designed as a continuous structure supported on reinforced concrete piers. The piers

consist of a pair of columns tied together by rein- forced lattice bracing and capped by a reinforced concrete cross beam. Foundations under each pier will comprise a cluster of four piles capped by a concrete cone.

The superstructure will consist of four rein- forced concrete beams of varying heights stiffened by cross beams and joined by a 29 ft. 6 in. concrete deck slab. The access viaducts to the bridge will be similar to the main structure but will have smaller spans supported on four-column piers.

Column-free supermarket will be Asia's largest

A mammoth supermarket with 100,000 sq. ft. of selling area, parking space for 1,500 cars and a heliport on its roof, is under construction at the Green Hills commercial complex in San Juan, Rizal, Philippines.

Claimed to be the largest of its type in Asia, the market will be housed in a spectacular long- span structure with a 130-metre column free in- terior space fronting Ortigas Avenue. The post- tensioned structure is being constructed by Weldon Construction Corporation to plans by Antonio Heredia.

Compress concrete construction utilizing posi- tive end connections will assure earthquake pro- tection for the long spans. The design calls for beams only 8in. wide at the ribs, integrated into each other as a monolithic structure to provide rigidity in all directions.

Column-free intersecting spaces are made pos- sible by a bridge beam, 10ft. by 2ft., which sup- ports one third of the entire structure with an ap- plied load of 1,200,000 lb. A 5-metre peripheral overhang counter-balances the structure and pro- vides weather protection for cars and shoppers.
