This residence is the first building on the South Bay Estate to be completed and has been specially designed for entertaining on a fairly elaborate scale as will be seen when we go further into the description of the building. A particu- lar feature of the residence is the use of weathered stone, quarried on the site and laid in random pattern for some of the exterior walls and also carried into the building especially for the main fireplace wall. This stone is very much more attractive than granite due to its greater variety of colour, and as it has been quarried from the site the building fits in very naturally into its surroundings as much of the land is exposed rock.

Due to the desire to provide ample room for gracious entertaining, all public space is of very generous proportions, but the bedrooms have been kept to more conventional sizes and it was possible to provide for four bedrooms, each with a private bath, above the living room-dining room area.

The index to the plan is a condensed description of the contents of the residence.

Ample projecting canopies protect all windows from the sun and rain, and has resulted in a very cool and comfortable house. Large window openings let in ample breeze and open up all rooms to the surrounding country and have been so placed as to frame the wonderful views,

Pre-cast concrete blocks in 2'0" squares, with granite chip finish, have been used for terraces and porch floors and make very handsome pavements.

Details have been kept very simple throughout with all teakwood left natural,

The plant box inside and outside entrance hall separated by glass wall makes an inviting entrance.

View of the building from the north. The various levels can be identified from the details above.
