Special lighting effects have been provided with niche in the stone wall and light in front below to silhouette planting or statuary placed therein and trough lighting has been provided in living room and dining room for general illumination and has proven very satisfactory and attractive.
Again, due to the special functions of the house ample pantry, kitchen and food stores have been provided, and the exceptionally large living room is so arranged as to divide
itself up into three zones, the fireplace corner, music wall between the two sets of french doors, and the library and reading corner, making the room easy to furnish and attrac. tive.
The service porch off the kitchen and garage is protected from the weather by deep concrete vertical louvres, which also serve the secondary purpose of preventing the servants on this porch from being seen from the adjoining lots and overlooking those lots, and has created an interesting appearance on that elevation.
Air Conditioning-As water supply is a problem on the estate, it was not considered advisable to try to air-condition the whole residence, but the dining room and all bedrooms have been air-conditioned with individual room units.
Two Chrysler Airtemp 34-ton window models have been built into a specially designed teakwood cabinet under the large picture window in the dining room and has proven functional and, at the same time, an attractive addition to the furnishing of the room which cannot be said for the average undisguised room unit.
A-ton upright Carrier room unit has been placed in the master bedroom next to the dressing table and chest set and the cover of the unit has been re-made in teakwood to match the furniture of the room and is thus inconspicuous, the other bedrooms are air-conditioned by -ton Chrysler window models fitted under a window next to the beds in the case of Rooms 18 and 19, and covers of these units have also been redesigned to match the rest of the furnishing. In the case of Room 21, advantage was taken of the space above the stair- case, leading down to the service porch to conceal a 34-ton Chrysler window model only the outlets, masked behind teak grilles, showing in the room itself.
The furnishing and interior decorating scheme were designed by the Architects.
The main mass of the house has been built on a natural shelf which has required very little forming and advantage has been taken of the natural steepness of the slope to the north- west and the servants quarters had been placed here on two considerably lower levels thus providing complete privacy for the main rooms of the house.
Preliminary sketches of the design of the house were worked in New York by Mr. K. Smith-Mitchell from original ideas of Mr. Emmanuel Gran.
