SINGAPORE HAS FOUR NEW INDUSTRIAL ESTATES

OUR new industrial estates are now being developed by the Singapore Housing and Development Board to encourage industrial de- velopment in the State.

They are at Tanglin Halt, where there are 62 factory sites in the approved scheme; Bendemeer Road Industrial Estate with 18 lots; Kam- pong Ampat with 16 lots; and Tanjong Rhu with 48 lots.

These are in addition to the Red Hill scheme where provision has been made to build 34 factories, ten of which have been completed and four are now in the process of con- struction; and the big Jurong scheme.

The Tanglin Halt scheme, which covers an area of 42 acres on Com- monwealth Avenue, is within the large satellite town complex of the Queenstown scheme, so that the

pro- blem of finding and housing workers in the new factories should not be a difficult one. This Queenstown scheme will on completion shortly provide 17,500 housing units for 140,000 people. The Housing and Development Board is prepared to give special consideration to the provision of housing in the Queen- stown area for people working on the Tanglin Halt estate.

the

Commonwealth Avenue itself is now under construction by Singapore Government to link Buona Vista Road with Alexandra Road

and is practically completed. The industrial estate is adjacent to the main Singapore-Federation line of Malayan Railway.

Fourteen sites in the estate have already been taken up, ten of them. by a single firm which intends to manufacture pipes and light gauge steel prefabricated structures. Ap- plications for further five sites are now being considered.

Eighteen lots at Tanglin Halt are now available for booking and another 25 lots will be ready in a few months. One firm which had intended to take five lots at Tanglin has now decided to move to a bigger site at Jurong.

The Bendemeer Road, off Laven- der Street-Serangoon Road,

Road. and Kampong Ampat, off Macpherson Road, schemes are on a smaller scale, designed for the man or company wanting to occupy a small ready- made standard factory or to erect a smaal factory. Both are in a central position, near to existing trade and labour connections.

Basin Reclamation, and offers nine standard factories and nine prepared sites with all facilities laid on. The Board is examining applications for all nine factories and nine sites at the moment.

On the Kampong Ampat estate, which is very near the Singapore Airport at Paya Lebar, there are 10 standard factories and six prepared sites. About ten of these are still available.

Cost of the standard factories on these two estates is about M$35,000 and they are offered for sale. The factory sites, which vary from 7,500 square feet to 21,000 square feet, are available on lease for 99 years either on outright sale, or on sale over a period of time. Loan facilities are available from the Singapore Fac- tory Development Ltd.

Among the industries to be started on these estates are an oil mill, silvering mirrors, printing ink manu- facture, book printing, plastic pro- ducts, electrical parts, paint factory, motor repair shops, tyre-retreading shops, making of cosmetics and a saw mill.
