INTERNATIONAL STANDARD POOL FOR KOWLOON TSAI

ALTHOUGH

LTHOUGH the primary inten- tion in constructing the swim- ming pool at Kowloon Tsai Park is to serve an thickly populated area, filled with people who have no ready access to the Colony's bathing beaches, and to bring a bit of coun- try through the Park itself to a built- up district, provision is made for full international standard swimming training and competition.

The pool has been made possible by a gift of $2,000,000 by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club towards the cost of the whole project, and. though increasing costs have caused some delay, it will not be long before work on the pool begins.

Excavation of the pool is already completed and when all the work is done there will be a champion- ship area 50 metres long and 20 metres wide with water depth vary- ing from 5 metres to 1 metres and a water polo area at one end. For general recreational purposes these

two areas will accommodate about 450 swimmers at one time. There is also a smaller general swimming area and separate from these joint pools, a children's swimming pool and. again separately, a paddling pool.

Non-slip Olympic standard diving boards at heights of one and three metres will be provided in a separate diving area joined to the main pool. Here cascading water will give the surface a rippling effect to enable the divers to gain a better judgement of their height from the surface.

Both the championship swimming and the diving areas will be illumin- ated by underwater lighting and the whole of the swimming pool enclo- sure will be floodlit at night.

A large rock about 10 feet high which occurs naturally in the centre of the pool enclosure has been left in place and will be terraced to separate the adult section from the

children's pool. This pool will take about 270 youngsters at one time and will be equipped with a water wheel and a 5-foot high wooden water chute.

Alongside the championship sec- tion will be open seating for appro- ximately 1.800 spectators, rising up the side of a natural terrace which will serve as a focal point for the whole of Kowloon Tsai Park. On top of the terrace will be a cafeteria to accommodate over 300 people.

Changing accommodation round the pools on the basket system will have a capacity of 1,200 males and 700 females.

Architects for the Park as a whole are Leigh and Orange. Site forma- tion is being carried out by Hung Yue and Co. Paterson Swimming Pool Filtration Plant is supplied by the Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd.. and the aluminium spring diving boards by H. Hunt and Co.
