Among the many new features in the planning of the block, the unique manner of the centralised grouping of the services merits special mention.

By placing the elements of verti- cal circulation at the centre of the building, only two staircases minimum required by Building re- gulations are used to serve for communication and fire escape for all the five flats on each floor. There is also the absence of the long and narrow, gloomy and wasteful cor- ridor which is so commonplace.

The building reflects a degree of good taste, attributable to this driving young architect's consistently thoughtful planning, and to the frankness of expression of the design by showing the struc- tural frame on the elevation.

The shape of the building is so evolved that not only the living room but all the other rooms as well have an attractive view and proper lighting and ventilation, amenities not always adequately provided for these days. The shape so formed also makes it possible to arrange the utility parts in the different flats to be opposite each other.

The contractor was Sing Fat Construction Co.

Electrical installations were car- ried out by the British General Electric Co. Ltd.

The terrace on which this block is located covers an area of about 80.000 sq.ft. between Hong Tung Rd. and La Salle St.

Another apartment block of 36 flats, also designed by Mr. Wong Hong-Yuen has not long been com pleted at the opposite end of the terrace. In the centre four remain- ing blocks of three storey flats are to be demolished for further re development.
