A new coloured map of Hong Kong is to be produced on a scale of 1:50,000 showing rock, soil and minerals under the ground surface. This will be based on topographical maps showing the surface layout of the colony, which are being produced by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys in Britain and are expected to be completed in 1971.

To meet immediate demands, an interim map is being produced in Hong Kong and will be ready later this year. It consists of a set of 17 transparent overlays which can be used together with the exis- ting topographic maps at the scale of 1:25,000. The overlays show the coastline, reservoirs and geological information of the soil below the surface.

Recent moves towards the fruition of the Hong Kong cross-harbour tunnel project culminated in the announcement last month that the Hong Kong Government was prepared to take up its option of

25 per cent of the promoter's total share capital.

A statement issued by Government said it had informed the Cross-Harbour Tunnel Co. Ltd. that it was prepared to subscribe 25 per cent of the com- pany's share capital up to a maximum of HK$27.5 million and to give, with other shareholders, a counter-guarantee of its proportionate share of a British bank loan of approximately £12.5 million to be guaranteed by the Export Credit Guarantee Department.

The statement continued: 'Government's agree- ment is conditional on the formal approval of the Legislative Council, on the satisfactory settlement of certain outstanding matters still the subject of negotiation between the company, the Export Credit Guarantee Department and proposed con- tractors, the Costain Consortium, and on the com- pletion of the company's other financial arrange- ments.'
