The ambulance bridge has been designed as a rigid frame structure. For the two and three tier car park a grid system of framing was adopt- ed to widen the spans between columns in both directions and to facilitate

an easy manoeuvring of traffic flow and parking.

For the special radiation protective measures around the Betatron and Linear Accelerators. barytes concrete has been used in order to save exces- sively thick, expensive or incon- venient walls which would otherwise be required. The barium sulfide aggregates which were obtained from mines in China are about 50% heavier than ordinary stone aggre gates and gave concrete densities of about 220 lbs a cubic foot.

of

The boiler flue has been designed with maximum temperatures 1500 F. in wind. After allowing for the thermal insulation of the special insulating fire bricks the concrete was designed for

સ temperature gradient of 185°F.

Quantity of Material

The total tonnage of mild steel bars used on the main hospital was about 4,500 tons and the volume of concrete poured was over two and quarter million cubic feet thus giving an approximate total weight of about 150.000 tons for the structure alone.

ENGINEERING SERVICES (A) Steam

Steam is being used for the following services: -- autoclaves dis- infector and sterilizers generally; hot water; air-conditioning for operat ing the turbine condensers, chilled water pump and heating ventilation plants; kitchens-including ward sterilizing sinks; laundry; quarters— hot water for nursing and house of ficers blocks only.

Four Wilson Multipac' horizontal packaged oil fired boilers have been installed each capable of raising 22,000 pounds of steam per hour at a pressure of 180 pounds per square inch.

A six-inch welded steel pipeline which follows that of the two sea water mains, delivers the oil fuel from barges by their own pumps to two
