Sub-structure

This includes the basement under the full width of the high rise section. and the relative lower ground floor slab. This was to facilitate the later installation of services which had not been fully designed at that stage. Any spare space will be used for bulk reserve stores. The substruc- ture was constructed as a separate contract immediately following the completion of piling works. Sub-soil drains were provided undernearth and across the basement in a down- hill direction and the basement slabs were all trimmed with bituminous compound. As the highest water table was at least seven feet below the basement it was not considered necessary to do any special water- proof tanking and the existing measures have proved to be very successful in the last few rainy

seasons.

Superstructure

This consists of a reinforced con- crete framework of column and beam construction interconnected with cross walls. The latter are designed to resist all the wind stresses im.

posed on the structure. This was further justified by the provision of a stiff horizontal floor diaphram. This assumption has provided slen- der column sizes and flush ceilings over all upper floors by means of ribbed hollow pot floor slabs and has enabled more flexible planning to be achieved.

The lower three floors have exposed beams and solid con crete floor slabs.

Maximum wind pressures of 50 lbs per square foot acting horizontally against the face of the building were assured for design calculations in accordance with the local code of practice regarding wind effect. The whole building was structurally sub- divided into a number of sections and wings by means of expansion joints. The maximum length of these sections was limited to 120 ft. to avoid excessive expansion and con- traction.

Miscellaneous Structures

The footbridge from the pathology department to the animal house has been designed as

a composite slim and light structure in structural steel and reinformed concrete.
