KOWLOON
ST. ELIGIUS CHURCH,
CHURCH, KOWLOON
ITUATED on a hillside within
Gun Club Barracks and sur- rounded by hanyan trees this project was largely an exercise in producing a building quickly for a very low cost, yet containing all the facilities found in the normal parish church.
The form of the building is a simple rectangle with v.c. roof sup- ported in portal frames. The church room and vestries are con- tained in an annexe connected to the main entrance by covered ways which enclose a small patio con- taining an ornamental fountain and planting giving the feeling of a 'cloistered entrance.
The choir is situated in a balcony at the rear approached by a spiral
stair. The front of the choir bal- cony contains the air conditioning duct with jet feeds.
Finishes generalty are conven- tional renders. All flooring is in teak wood blocks with the exception of the chancel which is 3" traver- tine. The rea altar wall is faced with Italian gold glass mosaic giv
ing a very rich effect. All glazing
is tinted blue.
Cost of the church. excluding air conditioning plant but including furniture, spire and externals, was $212,000. The seating capacity is 150 plus a choir of 20.
The construction time was 6 months.
