SHOPPING CENTRE COMPETITION WS ATTRACTIVE DESIGNS
TWENTY Malayan architects sub-
mitted entries in the competition held by Ipoh Town Council for a design for a shopping centre to replace the old Yau Tet Shin market on Cowan Street.
The winner was Mr. E.H. Ong., of Messrs Booty, Edwards and Partners of Singapore.
It was laid down in the conditions of the competition that there should be eight large eating shops of an approximate floor area of 1,200 square feet each, 10 medium-sized eating shops of approximately 600 square feet each, 20 small eating or coffee shops of 300 square feet each, and 30 lock-up stalls for general goods of about 150 square feet each.
Also to be provided were a super- visor's office, three telephone kiosks, public toilet facilities for men and women (including septic tank), and a car park for a minimum of 30
cars.
All shops had to be of the lock-up type, but although no living accom- modation was to be provided there had to be cooking, washing and rubbish disposal facilities for the eating shops.

There should be provision for gardens or green areas. The whole building must be designed so that maintenance costs would be reason- ably low. There should be oppor- tunity for good external illumination,
preferably for the entrance to the centre facing Cowan Street.
These requirements were made so that the existing eating shops and stall owners would be comfortably rehoused in attractive settings. The council also wanted a structure that would not only be functional but at the same time would be able to provide a pleasant and congenial environment.
