SHELL ROOF OVER AUCTION FLOORS:

To cover the unrestricted large areas with minimum columns, the Architect conceived the use of a shell roof pleasant, neat and economical. To give better ventilation, a series of skylights were incorporated with the shell roof. This combination gives subdued light and good ventilation. The whole of the auction floor is covered with 20 bays of shell roof and two bays of flat 100f at the sides. Each bay of the shell roof measures 142 ft. 6 ins. long divided into three spans of 47 ft. 6 ins. and the bay

width of each shell is 22 ft. The thickness of the shell varies from 24 to 3 ins. In view of the extensive size, a total of six transverse expan- sion joints have been provided. The lowest part of the shell roof is about 14 ft. from the ground, while the highest part is over 18 ft. above the ground. This great htight gives necessary headroom for the manoeu- vring of the lorries and also provides adequate natural ventilation.

FLAT ROOF OVER THE CHANGING AREA:

The flat roof over the changing area will be used as the area for sort- ing out the baskets, and is of con- ventional R. C. beam and slab con- struction. The bay width is 22 ft. as with

the shell roof, but the beam spans 30 ft. with a 6 ft. cantilever canopy along the whole length of the market. This flat roof is separated from the shell roof with a longitudin- al expansion joint.

FOUNDATIONS:

very

Because the shell roof is sensitive to settlement and the site is on newly reclaimed ground, all the buildings including single storey buildings are founded on piles. A total of 227 Franki Piles were used and driven to a depth of about 75 ft.

MATERIAL:

The building of the vegetable mar- ket was financed by the Colonial De- velopment and Welfare Fund, and it was laid down that all the building materials should be local products or imported from Britain. The present market is built to this requirement with the exception of timber and brick where special permission was obtained.

FINISHES:

To reduce the cost of maintenance, all the external walls are finished with Shanghai plaster in two different shades. It is also intended to use Glamorock to provide colour accents where necessary.

по

The shell roofs are constructed with wrought formwork, hence internal plaster will be applied apart from touching up with lime putty. This procedure will result in a con- siderable saving on plaster work.

COST:

The total cost of the Vegetable Market is estimated to be $2,501,000.- This gives a unit rate of $1.41 per cubic foot, or $24.20 per sq.ft. of covered floor area.
