All the incoming lorries will enter the market at the main entrance on the Lai Chi Kok Road, these either go to the unloading docks in the front or through the side lane within the market to the loading docks at the rear. There are two exits along the Far Tseung Street. This arrange- ment does not only prevent cross traffic, but it also gives better control of tthe market.
Apart from lavatories, importers' store, and basket repairing store on the side and cashier's office under the tower block, the whole of the ground floor is an open space with wired mesh fence dividing the area into two sections. The front section, about 75% of the total area, is taken up by the Auction Floor where vegetables are sorted out and sold. The rear section, the remaining 25%. is 00- cupied by the Changing Area, where the vegetables are changed into the buyer's own baskets before carting
away.
During the preliminary design stage, studies were made to develop the market on a smaller site with multiple storey buildings. It must be appreciated that the operating hours. for a market are usually short but concentrated and quick turn round is the key word for efficient operation.
So the present horizontal develop- ment was decided apon.
TOWER BLOCK:
The tower block is situated at the centre of the market, and is a three storey R.C. building with provision for extension of one floor. The structure is of conventional beam and slab construction,
