HE largest and probably the most interesting wholesale market in the Far East is now under construc- tion on new reclamation ground at Cheung Sha Wan, Hong Kong.

The first stage the subject of consists of the develop- long rectangular areas vegetable and fish mar-

this feature ment of two to house the kets.

In between them will eventually rise a fruit market, and, beside the fish market, a smaller section for poultry (see diagram). Alongside this huge marketing square abbatoirs will be built.

The whole area. when fully de- veloped, will be the largest single dis- tribution centre of foodstuffs for Hong Kong's millions.

VEGETABLE MARKET

The vegetable market is situated at the corner of Lai Chi Kok Road and Fat Tseung Street and occupies an area of 522 ft. x 260 ft. It consists of a single storey building covering an area of 522 ft. x 180 ft. with a tower block for the administration in the

centre.

In view of the large number of lor- ries that are likely to converge dur- ing the marketing hours, adequate access and lay-by bays have been provided within the site, thus pre- venting lorries waiting on the road and blocking the traffic. To speed up the process of loading and unloading, 44 unloading bays have been provid- ed in the front and 20 loading bays at the rear.
