THE first multi-storey car park in

Malaysia will be completed in Singapore in the second half of 1963.

Designed by P.W.D the M$2 million seven-storey car park will contribute to the solution of the City-State's twin traffic pro- blems: congestion and lack of parking space.

Sited on a triangular plot of Crown land. bounded by Market Street, Cross Street and Cecil Street. the project when completed will re- lieve the choked traffic in the city area especially during the rush hours in the morning, at lunch time, and in the evening.

Piling work on the site of the car park, which will have a total area of 54,723 square feet, is now in progress.

It is expected to be completed by the end of the year when construc- ! tion of the super-structure will be gin.

The car park, which was first mooted by the government at the beginning of this year, will be a re inforced concrete structure. with open sides from the first floor up- wards.

It will have a foundation of pre- cast reinforced concrete piles. About 741 piles will be required for the with "set" depths ranging from 70

ft. to 140 ft.

The car park will have parking space for 784 cars including 192 bays for large vehicles and 21 areas for motor cycles and scooters.

On the ground floor. there will be 10 lock-up shops, a snack bar. a tourist bureau, a motor showroom. offices and arcades, and toilet facili ties.
