CHINESE LOOK FOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HEAD- QUARTERS

THE new ten-storey headquarters of the Singapore Chinese Cham- ber of Commerce will. when com- pleted, look like an old royal palace in Peking. but the architects have. made sure that it will have the fix- tures and amenities of a twentieth century office mansion.
One hundred and forty feet high, the building will have a total area of 81.000 square feet. 56 office rooms with a floor space of 41.170 feet, three guest rooms, an auditorium, a dance hall, a restaurant. an exhibi- tion hall. library, a roof garden and a balcony.
Provision has been made for a car park capable of accommodating 80 cars. on both sides of a turfed garden.
The architect is Mr. Ho Beng Hong, B. A. (architecture) of the National Central University Nanking.

He has his offices (Ee Hoong Chwee and Co.) in Winchester House. Collyer Quay, Singapore, "The mansion will be essentially a Chinese structure." he said.
Features which will give the man- sion a Chinese look are:
Facing the street will be a 14 feet wall topped by Chinese tiles. with a massive gate in the middle and nine dragons worked into the wall on each side.
The main entrance, 24 feet wide and 25 feet high, will have two Chinese ornamental "button" doors painted in red, guarded by six-feet high white stone lions on each side.
There will be two other small gates, 14 feet wide, on each side of the wall. for every-day use.

The lions may be imported from China if it is found impossible to get them in Malaya. The tiles may come either from China or Kuala Lumpur.
The whole building will be air- conditioned. There will be three lifts. two capable of carrying 20 each, and another service lift to carry ten persons.
The interior of the building will be completely modern. The front portion will have a white marble finish.
The chamber will have its offices on the ground and first floors. On the first floor. apart from five office rooms, is an auditorium, 6,800 sq.ft. capable of seating 700 people, ex-

hibition room 2.580 sq.ft.. a library. and a 16 x 60 ft. stage.
There will be a balcony on the second floor. looking down to the auditorium on the first floor. to seat 100 people, and five office rooms.
There will be eleven office rooms each on the third, fourth. fifth and sixth floors.
On the seventh floor will be a 3,250 sq.ft. restaurant and a 60 x 61 ft. dance floor.
The eighth floor is occupied by a recreation hall (1,200 sq.ft.) and a 80 x 60 ft. roof garden.
There will be three modern bed- rooms on the ninth floor with attached bathrooms. for guests.
Each floor will have an
area of 9.660 sq.ft. It will be the tallest building in Hill Street. when com pleted.
