building construction of different types is unprecedented, little attention is generally paid to beautify a town by providing interesting or enjoyable landmarks.
In Ipoh however, (population 200,- 000 over 31 square miles of municipal area) the capital of Perak state, long famed as the cleanest and best laid out town in the country, the public and civic authorities have engaged in beautifying the town.
Three ornamental water fountains have been completed recently as well
as a Japanese style landscaped garden, sprawling over an acre, adding much to the beauty of the town and the pride of its people.
The town itself nestles in the lush Kinta Valley, bisected by two rivers and surrounded by distant purple clad hills.
The most attractive of the orna- mental water fountains is a gift by the Perak Turf Club. It has been built on an outsized traffic round- about at the southern entrance to the town and is named after a former

The traffic round-about itself cost the municipal authorities about M$ 90,000.
The water fountain, costing another M$75,000 is a complex of eight fan jets on the inner side of a tiled, shallow 30 feet diameter pool con- taining 35.000 gallons of water and 16 other whirligig and venturi jets in the pool, shooting water up to vary- ing heights.
From the centre of the pool rises an attractive. mosaic gold leaf tiled superstructure. supported on gleaning white curved columns, with the water cascading down in an arc from about 50 feet high.

A big commercial Messrs. Ban Guan Hin have also donated a smaller fountain, costing M$30,000 and also located on another traffic round-about in the heart of the town, in memory of the firm's founder.
Both these fountains were designed by Booty, Edwards and Partners with
and the engineering aspect installation of the water jets complex, undertaken by Harper, Gilfillan and Co.
A third fountain, put up by the municipal authorities themselves in a public park is a monument to the memory of those who were killed in the state during the 12-year Com- munist Terrorist Emergency Period.
The Japanese styled landscaped garden, also built by the Perak Turf Club, cost about M$70,000 and five Japanese experts were specially brought from Japan to undertake the work.
The garden includes а typical Japanese tea-house, an ornamental waterfall, a crazy shaped fish pond, small hillocks, ornamental bridges, stone lanterns and pagodas brought from Japan and flowering shrubs. The whole area is criss-crossed with small paths and brightly lit up at night.
