NEW FIRE STATION AT KUN TONG

KUN TONG'S new fire station, on

the Kun Tong Road and op posite the branch government offices and clinic now under construction, is of the same design as the six other new fire stations built in recent years at Li Chi Kok. Aberdeen, Ma Tau Chung. North Point. Tsun Wan and Yuen Long with slight changes in internal accommodation made neces sary by local conditions and demands of service.

The building, which is designed by the Hong Kong Public Works Department, falls into three portions

the appliance room which houses the three fire engines accommodated

in each station; the ancillary accom- modation above at the side of the appliance room, and the drying tower which is also used for drills and practices.

The whole building is in reinforced concrete, faced in front by black Japanese tiles. The floor of the ap pliance room is covered in a special diagonally ribbed quarry tile from England which is the same as the tiles used in the London County Council fire stations. This has been found to stand up to the heavy abrasive year caused by the heavy boots of the firemen and to the pres- sures caused by the speedy get away

of the fire engines themselves. The special quick release doors which fly completely open at the lightest touch once the alarm is given are also of the same pattern as those used in British fire stations. The appliance room walls are covered in mosaic tiling.

In the ancillary wing on the ground floor is a hose store, a re- creation room. an office for the station officer. the watch room and a duty room. On the first floor is a dormitory for the watch on duty. the firemen, apart from the station officer. do not live in the station: the men
