Front Elevation-From Architects' Plan.
The abnormal conditions existing in Hong Kong to-day has been a problem, since the influx of refugees which started more than two years ago has taxed accom- modation for all classes of people from the poorest of coolies to the wealthiest of officials. Architects have been called upon to provide for as many living rooms as possible in areas available and this demand has resulted in some unusual arrangements in house designing.
On this page, we illustrate from architect's drawings a five-room layout which includes, in addition, two bath- rooms, two servants rooms, kitchen, store and servants bathroom.
This house has been built on Lower Castle Road where the congestion of houses has already reached a high peak, and the problem of providing ample window areas for each of the rooms in this particular building has been effectively handled.
While the layout cannot by any means be considered an ideal one for convenience and comfort, it has the advantage of providing for the accommodation of a maximum number of people with a minimum amount of waste hall and corridor space.
The architects for this building are Messrs. Davies, Brooke & Gran, and the General Contractors Messrs. Lai Kee Co.
