The hilly character of the ground on the Island of Hong Kong and the seemingly natural desire of humanity to congregate in as large numbers as possible, in spite of all difficulties, has given rise to the construction in past years of blocks of tenements and multi-storied dwellings in groups on ascending slopes, which when viewed from certain angles present the phenomenon of buildings piled one on top of another in seemingly haphazard and impossible ways.

This view of Queen's Road East, at the junction of Kennedy Road, gives one aspect of many a similar scene to be found in the City of Victoria.
