The recent addition to the residence of Mr. P. A. Cox at Sheung Shui, New Territories, has brought to our attention a rather picturesque form of construction for private residences.
As will be seen from the accompanying illustrations, the house is of bungalow type in typical Chinese style which is particularly appropriate for the district in which it stands.
The designing of the extension to the original bungalow has been cleverly executed by Messrs. Leigh & Orange who have succeeded in avoiding any appear- ance of disharmony between the old and new structures.
They have in fact, by the judicious placing of the annex in relation to the old building and the careful consideration of the blending of line and colour, actually enhanced the appearance of the old building.
While the adaptation of the Chinese style of architecture to European residences has not always been conducive to happy results it does offer oppor- tunities for the construction of extremely interesting residences at very reasonable cost, and we feel sure that the encouragement of this type of residence by European architects in Hong Kong would lead to a considerable increase in their development in the comparatively untouched areas in the hinterlands of the British territory on the Mainland.
