THE HONG KONG AND FAR EAST BUILDER
A flagstone wall bordered by planting areas leads up to the front entrance porch from the Car Court. The en- trance door of solid teak has been made of generous width, and is flanked by a decorative glass panel. The entrance hall is so arranged as to permit all the ground floor rooms to open off it. From this hall wide steps lead down into the living room and up to the study wing.
The living room is very generous in size and well lighted by large windows and sliding and french doors opening out on to the porch.
The living room porch is open on three sides and will be used as an out-door living room. Power plugs are pro- vided here to facilitate its use for outdoor dining purposes.
The actual dining room connects with this porch across an open paved area which will be covered with awning. Interesting use has been made of different levels without making communication between rooms difficult or uncom- fortable.
All windows and doors are fitted with maximum size glass panels and will frame views of the landscaped garden and the distant vistas.
Careful consideration has been given to the various types of built-in cupboard and storage spaces required in a house. Hanging and drawer space for clothes, shoe cup- boards, book and magazine shelves and racka, kitchen and cleaning equipment stores, built-in radiogram and record cabinets, all have been specially designed for maximum convenience with the minimum of waste areas.

Many special features have been incorporated.
The roof space will be cooled and ventilated by an exhaust system which will also help create general movement of air throughout the house when the air- conditioning system is not functioning.
The kitchen has its own exhaust system through a ventilating duct, which will draw cooking smells and heat to the top of the house to be dispersed by prevail- ing winds away from the house.

An automatic disposal unit connected to the drains of the kitchen suite will grind up all waste matter and discharge it through the waste system. Dry gar- bage, tins, cans, etc., disposed of through a double sealed chute into special containers.
Telephone outlets for plug-in type instruments have been provided in the Living Room, Study, Bedrooms, Sun Porch, with main instrument in the Kitchen. Lighting has been scientifically designed and some unusual effects have been obtained such as for the illuminating of plant areas, concealed lighting from statuary and apot-lighting to dining table and pic- tures. Ample lighting outlet is also provided.
Loudspeaker extensions from living room to porch and study.
Individual sprinkler system for watering plant boxes, making it unnecessary to carry water around in buckets.
Home Movies Mr. Harper's hobby being "home movies," a small projection room under the main stairs has been provided, so located as to make possible projection through a concealed opening in one of the stair-risers on to a screen 45′0′′ distant at the south end of the living room, giving an image of 7′0′′ X 9′0′′. The screen will be concealed in a recess in the ceiling, and the "audience" can be comfortably seated on the three wide steps leading down from the Hall into the living room, eliminating completely the usual shifting of heavy furniture to provide seating accommodation.
Work Room A Work Room has also been provided for film edition and splicing, off the study, separated from the study by "Fold-wall" partition which when closed conceals the work room completely, eliminating the necessity of putting away paraphernalia between operations.
A small flower arrangement room with sink, work shelves and cabinet storage has been provided next to the projection room.
