A typical Farsta couple in the carless shopping centre.

Atom Town is only 20 minutes by underground railway from Stock- holm the line was extended when and most of

the men work in the City.

But it is more than a dormitory suburb. For the shopping centre has all a town needs, including branches of the leading Swedish department stores. In fact it is designed to draw in customers from districts outside.

No traffic is allowed in the centre itself but there is parking for 2,000 cars round its fringes.

Though you cannot drive through the town centre you can drive under it. Lorries deliver goods to the shops by tunnel and cars can park there for up to ten minutes to collect a grocery order. On one floor below the tun- nel there is even more parking space. Traffic jams do not exist.

Atom Town has:

No Hotels But there is a first- class restaurant with snack counter. dance floor and bar open until mid- night.

Few Garages But outside the flats are individual parking lots with plug-in electric heaters to keep cars warm and easy to start in zero tem- peratures. Rent: 13s. 6d. a month.

No Family Doctors but there is a well-equipped health centre with a staff of 30 nurses, dentists and doc- tors, including a child health specialist and an expert on skin complaints.

No Fences restricting access to the surrounding woods and lakes but also no bustling streets and few back gardens. The buildings are all set in parkland.

The teenagers of Farsta with their own youth centre have few com- plaints. And they take atomic energy for granted.

Farsta atom station is a £13 million experiment built to gain experience.

With no home-produced coal or oil and demand for electricity rising steadily, Sweden may soon be relying heavily on atomic energy.
