with steeple and it has a leak-proof steel lining to make sure no radiation gets out.
Heat from the furnace is used to raise steam to drive turbines and make electricity. The current flows into the national grid and will be just enough for the atom town's needs.
In most power stations this is the end of the story. But, at Farsta, instead of going to waste the steam which has passed through the turbine will be used a second time to heat
more water.
And this water will be pumped. piping hot, down a culvert which passes under the lake to circulate warmth through every room in every apartment in town.
The average two bedroomed flat has a stainless steel double sink unit, an electric cooker with extractor fan to take away smells, a two compart- ment fridge big enough to store a side of beef, nine fitted cupboards, a pull-out bread board and a magni- ficent view.
The occupants do not have to buy their kitchen equipment
It goes with the flat together with the lino on the floor, the fitted war- drobe in the bedroom, the mirrors and shower fittings in the bathroom. the hot water and the central heating.
The Atomic Town planners insisted on it.
Rents average £4.7s.6d. a week. But there are subsidies for families who cannot pay the full rent. And in Sweden wages are good. Bus drivers can earn more than £18 a week.
