The design of the building is definitely modern in trend. The exterior is faced with cream terrazzo tiles, while in the interest of hygiene, the interior floors and walls have been covered with impervious tiles in order to facilitate the cleaning of the stalls.
The new market is provided for the retail trade only. It is four stories high, with a main entrance for the public from both Queen's Road and Des Voeux Road sides. The passenger lift is provided at the latter entrance. The entrance for goods is from the Jubilee Street and Queen Victoria Street sides.
On the ground floor are located fifty-seven fish stalls
and forty-six poultry stalls, and incorporated on this level is a separate puble lavatory. The first floor has space for sixty-two pork and forty beef stalls, while the vegetable and fruit vendors are accommodated on the On the top floor are the Central and Western respectively.
On the top floor are located the Central and Western Market offices for 12 Inspectors, 2 Sub-Inspectors, 11 interpreters, and 2 Clerks. Quarters for the European Inspector, Market Overseer, Married Foremen, Atten- dants, as well as for thirty Market Cleaners and ten Meat Porters are provided on the opposite side of the same floor.
