The New Central Market in Hong Kong has just been completed, and the occupation of the stalls by the various dealers has inaugurated a further facility in the commercial life in Hong Kong.

The comparison of the old market and this new one constructed on the same site, offers, probably as much as anything else does, a picture of the advance in ideas and the progress of industrial amenities in this out of the way Colony in conformation with the most modern ideas at Home.

In place of the old, dank, dark, dismal building, and wretched arrangement wherein dirt, refuse and smells, were all relegated to inaccessible corners, there to accumu- late ad nauseam, we have now a structure, the first con- sideration in the design of which is the provision for ample light and air, the removal of odd corners, and the provision for floor, wall and store space which will not only be easy to keep clean but will actually invite clean- liness.

It is difficult to describe a market building since simplicity is its essential feature, but a glance at the photographs we publish with this article, or better still, a visit to the premises, will be convincing proof that our Public Works Department have designed and built for the convenience and safety of our present generation and for many generations to come.
