Repairs were carried out on the 24" Shing Mun Trunk Mains and the preparation of the necessary piping and joints for the repair of the West cross harbour main was practically completed.

The steam boilers at Tytam Tuk and Pokfulam Road were surveyed by Messrs. Carmichael & Clarke and passed as satisfactory after minor repairs. All pumps operated satis- factorily as required. The installation of stand-by generators or diesels at "all-electric" pumping stations was under con- sideration. Also under consideration was the installation of a pumped salt water fire service for the city of Victoria.

Work continued on the following contracts: Eastern R. G. Filters and Pump House; manufacture of 15,000 feet of 24′′ concrete pipes, laying 15.000 feet of 24" concrete pipes in Bowen Road and Wong Nei Chong Filters. 11,000 feet of 6′′ asbestos cement pipe and 1,300 feet of 4′′ G.I. pipe were laid in connection with improvements to the Fanling water supply.

26,500 feet of distribution mains were laid in the Urban areas to meet new development or to improve distribution.

4.078 meters were repaired and tested. 18,316 accounts for water consumed, and 978 demand notes for deposits to ensure payment of water charges, were issued.

ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL OFFICE

A large quantity of unserviceable and obsolete vehicle spares have been listed and boards of survey requested. One board has already completed its inspection. The obsolete GMC spares which were hoarded and held against possible purchase by the military authorities have now been disposed of by public auction.

The work done by the Electrical Section during this period included 102 electrical installations completed and over 75,000 yds of wire used. 111 electrical installations were in hand, 684 faults were repaired, and 69 estimates were prepared.

In the Mechanical Section, one Standard Vanguard Estate Car was obtained locally for the H.K.D.F.. 4 Meat Vans with locally built bodies on Karrier chassis were obtained for the Urban Council, and 6 Ford Troop Carriers with locally built bodies were obtained for the Police Department.

A total of 3635 repair jobs were completed by the work- shops during August and September.
