With two dredgers working, a total of 74,351 cubic yards were removed from Causeway Bay Shelter; K.P.P. No. 6; Kai Tak Seaplane anchorage; Gloucester Road Sea Wall; Govern- ment Vegetable Market Area (Yaumati) and Government Rice Godown Area (Yaumati).

Reclamation work at Aberdeen is proceeding, all precast blocks were completed and most of them placed. The ashlar The wall is rising and reclamation by dumping advancing. contract is about 70% completed.

Subterranean explorations of the hilly neighbourhood at Tsun Wan for filling material for reclamation was started and investigation of foundations for possible ferry pier at Marsh Road commenced.

At the Airport the perimeter fencing contract was com- pleted. The "patching of runways" was proceeding, the quality of the work being excellent but progress slow.

A P.W.D. Laboratory at Arsenal Yard was set up in a A 150 ton building vacated by Cables & Wireless Ltd. compression testing machine was received and put into operation.

ROADS OFFICE

The months of August and September cover the period of closing of the old maintenance contracts and opening of new the ones. Amongst the principal works completed were resurfacing of Johnston Road (part), Upper Albert Road junction with Garden Road and Caine Road, Mosque Street, Severn Road, Collinson Road, First Street, Second Street, Water Street, Russell Street, miscellaneous items and footpaths and channels and works contingent on land sales and private account works in Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Good progress has been made in the resurfacing of Garden Road, Stanley Main Street, Mt. Kellett Road, Triangle Street, Chung Ching Street, Peel Street and repairs in Eastern Street and at Tonnochy Pier. Causeway Road was completed except for final coat of tartop and Tunglowan Road is now in hand. A start was made on the roadwork on Peak Road,

All rainstorm damage and landslips have been repaired. Departmental labour has been busy on clearing minor slips and general maintenance work as well as trench reinstatements.

In Kowloon new works in hand included the reconstruction of a further section of Shanghai Street, construction of access roads to King's Park Government Quarters and construction of new road to temporary La Salle College.

Repairs and maintenance work was also carried out in the New Territories.

Government quarries at Morrison Hill, Hok Un and Hung Shui Kiu maintained a steady production of stone.

The contract for filling Japanese Tunnels on Hong Kong Island has been completed. Contract No.25 of 1949 for similar work on the Mainland is well advanced. The filling of tunnels by pumping at Leighton Hill has been completed in all places under the buildings, and the tunnels are being closed.

The work of opening and inspecting all A.R.P. tunnels is being continued.

VALUATION AND RESUMPTIONS OFFICE

The total valuations for lease renewals amounted to $86,880; for resumption purposes, 615 properties were valued at $748,122; for exchanges the total valuations amounted to $364,200, and for estate duty 76 hereditaments were valued at $1,579,664.

A large amount of work has been put in by this depart- ment in assessing government property values, purchases by government and for town planning schemes etc. the total valuations amounting to $3,646,726. In addition, the deprecia- tion rate for Heep Yun School was assessed and the market prices of land in various areas was tabulated for Town Planning Office.

WATERWORKS OFFICE

Rainfall for the two months was 30.97 inches compared with an average of 24.32 inches for the same period. The averaged daily consumption for August was 38.4 million gallons and for September 39.05 million gallons compared with 38.06 and 37.40 respectively for the previous year.
