during the preparation of the layout plan, and to avoid a stepped. hillside cemetery appearance, large platforms with controlled falls have been adopted to produce an undulat- ing campus from all viewpoints.
SERVICES
General
It is the University's ultimate aim to house all students. members of staff and their families on the campus. Therefore, to provide a modern stan- dard of living in a rural area for a population of some 8,000 people the planning on the main services will require much detailed study and in- vestigation.
Water Supply
There is at present no nains water supply available in the area, and the University is expected to develop its own resources from the nearby hill streams. Chung Chi College is at present obtaining its supply partly from the stream on the hills situated within the University site but mainly from a stream at Kau Tau on the hills west of the Tai Po Highway. Con- struction work is now being carried out on the main water tunnel of the Plover Cove Scheme which traverses under these hills and is designed to transport water from the completed reservoir at Plover Cove to the treatment works now being built at Shatin. There will also be branch tunnels or headings in this area to collect water from the catchment area of these high hills and feed into the main tunnel. It is assumed that the supply to Chung Chi College from Kau Tau will not be affected as Government must have made due allowance for the needs of the rural population in the area as well as for an institution like Chung Chi College. However, the establishment of a Uni- versity with its large population was not anticipated in the planning of the tunnels. Preliminary investigations at the Kau Tau area and over the area to the north-west of the University site have indicated that adequate sup- plies from the hill streams may be obtained to meet the University's re- quirements, but this prospect must be discounted now that water from these hills is to augment the Plover Cove's yield.

Two possible methods emerge.— a) to tap water from the Plover Cove main tunnel by incorporat- ing a pumping point in the shaft of the tunnel nearest to the University site and lift water to the highest University ground, or b) to pipe water from the Shatin
treatment works.
