Contra
be
The above alternatives have their advantages and dis-advantages and the costs involved will require consider- able detailed study and cannot ascertained at this stage. It must, however, be pointed out that the water to be tapped from the tunnel will be coming straight from the storage re- servoir and therefore untreated. It will require treatment at the Univer- sity site before it is distributed for consumption. Mechanical rapid sand filters may be employed in the puri- fication process which may be carried out indoors in a pumping station. A more convenient site would be on the land proposed for College I if this method of water supply is to be adopted, but the main objection to this method is the attendant main-
tenance.
To pipe water from the Shatin Treatment Works will require a long main and probably high first cost but this disadvantage will be offset by the small amount of maintenance re- quired.
Sea-water Supply
Apart from water for drinking and cooking purposes, sea-water will be needed to meet flushing requirements and fire fighting as Government will certainly not permit the use of mains water for this purpose. The solution. of this problem is much more simple as salt-water can be obtained from the sea and lifted to a balancing tank on a high level. A sea-water intake and pump-house is indicated on the future reclamation on the layout plan.
Sewage Disposal, Surface Water Drainage
Preliminary studies show that a cen- tralised purification works and dis- posal system may entail high cost in sewerage construction. It is therefore tentatively proposed that a number of smaller installations in the form of Imhoff tanks may be dispersed on the lower ground along the railway to serve the various building groups by separate sewerage system. The effluent will be discharged into the sea through suitable outfalls. Storm and surface water will be carried by a separate system of drains and dis- charged into the sea.
ESTIMATES OF COST
General
It is not possible at this stage to prepare estimates of cost with any accuracy with the exception of the University central buildings for which sketch plans are included in this re- port. Certain variations have been made to the accommodation of the Students Centre after consultation with University authorities.
