On each side of the road is lookout bay, each about 40 feet long by 10 feet deep from curb to re. taining wall. Each bay contains three timber benches and three low planked tables. Small pipes are pro vided in the pavement in front of each table to support umbrella

Both the pavements and the look- out bays have been carefully design- ed to rest mainly on the natural ground and only partly on fill. More lookout bays can be constructed, if necessary, in future extensions along other portions of the pavement, but these will have to be of reinforced concrete and cantilevered out.

Drink Stalls

are

On the top terrace. three drink and light refreshment stails provided in one simple structure with an adjoining lavatory block. The building consists basically of a series of sever reinforced-concrete tapered columns and cantilevered trusses connected by reinforced-con- crete beams and roofed over with corrugated asbestos-cement sheets on 8 inches x 3 inches purlins. The columns and trusses are arranged to form three bays side by side (oue for each stall) with a projecting canopy in front of the centre bay to provide a covered waiting area cum dining area.

The sides and rear of the build- ing have 4-inch-thick brick walls with access doors to each stall at the rear and ventilation louvres at each side. At the front are long serving counters for each stall ex- tending the full width of the build- ing. They are fitted with sliding and folding doors which, like the fixed panels above them. consist of wooden frames filled with Weld- mesh,

Inside the building, the stalls at either end are each 11 feet 3 inches wide by 8 feet 3 inches deep. The larger, centre stall is 16 feet long by 8 feet 3 inches deep. Each stall is fitted with a sink. workbench and storage shelves. The floor inside

the building and in the waiting cum dining area is of 4-inch-thick con- crete on a 4-inch hard core.

The adjacent lavatory block is set at a slightly lower level than the main building and is screened by a brick wall, Wash basins and W.C. facilities are provided for men and

women.

In front of the stalls is an un- roofed raised platform. On this will be situated the weathertight obser- vation telescope which will be oper- ated on a coin-in-the-slot system.

Both the stalls and the toilets have been supplied with electricity and water from existing lines. Soil and waste water is drained to exist. ing manholes and septic tank. Sub- dued lighting has been installed the road and terraces.

The completed work forms the first phase of a comprehensive de- velopment plan for Mount Faber. The second wili consist of develop- ment along the slopes beside the road, cutting terraces and providing Trees will be planted to en- hance the landscape.

Other pos sible future developments include the provision of a full-scale restaur- ant and a rest house on the slopes of the hill with suitable access the road above.
