City from the sea -Aberdeen
NEW town centre is to rise
from the sea at Aberdeen, the fishing port on the southwest coast of Hong Kong Island.
It is to be built on land to be reclaimed at the eastern end of Aberdeen Harbour between the mainland and the island of Ap Lei Chau.
This is one of the main proposals in a long-term outline development plan for the Aberdeen area which has been prepared by the Town Planning Board.
Aberdeen is dominated by the peninsula of Brick Hill to the south, and the more densely wooded slopes of the hills to the north.
Between Ap Lei Chau and the mainland are the natural harbours of Shek Pai Wan and Aberdeen Channel, with its extension into Staunton Creek, where at present a largely non-seagoing boat population resides.
The existing built-up area extends from Tin Wan Road to the West, Ap Lei Chau to the south and Staunton Creek to the east.

Much of the land is unleased Crown land though a large propor- tion of it is held on temporary per- mit. Some private property will be affected by the town planning pro- proposals.
The Town Planning Board recom- mends that that any private land affected should be resumed to give effect to the development plan.
