Tenders called for Winnipeg gallery
A contract is about to be placed for construc- tion of the new Winnipeg Art Gallery. Tenders from general contractors closed on October 17.
The new gallery, designed by Hong Kong trained architect, Gustavo da Roza (Far East Builder March 1968), will be located on a trian- gular site in the centre of the city. Mr. da Roza's design was the winning entry in a competition open to all architects living in or licensed to practice in Canada and which attracted more than 475 applications from Canada and the United States. The delta-shaped building was lauded by the judges as one of the finest triangular building designs yet achieved.
Since the competition, Mr. da Roza has visited major galleries and museums throughout North America with a view to incorporating the most advanced and functional features in the new gallery. It will be a five level structure incorpora- ting a roof level with coffee shop and public lounge opening to a sculptured roof garden; a main gallery level with 25,000 sq. ft. of space for temporary or permanent displays plus lounges and offices; a mezzanine level with administrative and curatorial space; a ground floor with public entrance off Memorial Boulevard, 300 seat auditorium, lecture and seminar rooms, gift shop and picture rental facilities; and basement with storage and working area, and multi-purpose studios for educational activities, painting and sculpture.
52-storey residential block in Sydney
One of the tallest residential buildings in the world a 52-storey apartment block and motel - has been erected in the centre of Sydney. Called the Park Regis, the building is 461 ft. high and is built of lightweight reinforced concrete.
The main tower is constructed on a six-level podium base, comprising a lower ground floor with a restaurant, ground floor shopping area and a four- floor car park. The tower's ground plan is in the shape of the letter Y. Its first 10 floors are oc- cupied by a 150-suite motel. The remaining 36 floors are home units. Each floor has an area of 4,000 sq. ft.

between units. A wind tunnel test was done on a 120 to 1 scale model at Sydney University and the results established that sun-hoods and protruding columns are helpful in reducing wind effects.
A total of 10,700 cu. yd. of concrete was used 90 per cent of this being lightweight. Tower columns, shear walls and podium columns were tied together at basement level with a 12 in. thick slab with four layers of reinforcing. The greater part of the facade is concrete which has been given three-coat application of Vinyl-polymer disper- sion paint.
