Construction starts on suspension bridge
Construction has started on the Kanmom Bridge to link Honshu, Japan's main island with the south- ern island of Kyushu. The suspension type bridge will be 1,068 m (3,560 ft.) long and will span Shimonoseki Strait between the two islands. It will be the longest bridge of its type in Asia, rank- ing ninth among the worlds largest.
Being built for the Japan Highway Public Cor- poration, a government agency, the bridge is ex- pected to handle an average of some 80,000 vehicles per day after it is completed in 1973.
The two suspension cables, each to weigh 2,540 tons and having a diameter of 64 cm (25.6in). will be anchored by two mammoth cable anchors. Each anchor will have a height, width and depth measurements of 25 m (83 ft.) and will incorporate 1,500 tons of steel.
The two main towers which will support the main suspension cables will be 133.8 m (446 ft.) high and weigh 3,000 tons each. Contracts for one of the huge cable anchors and one of the towers have been awarded jointly to Nippon Kokan and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.

Two development companies are sponsoring the project Collins, Tuttle and Co. of New York, and the Societe d'Etudes Financieres et de Realisations Immobilieres, of Paris. The site for the building, which will contain 1.25 million sq.ft. of floor space, is on the River Seine's Left Bank.
Construction will comprise a reinforced con- crete core and a steel superstructure sheathed in aluminium and glass. In addition to the tower the site will include a 300,000 sq.ft. enclosed shopping centre, parking for 2,000 cars, a cultural centre and an 11-storey building. The total floor area will be 3 million sq.ft.
Principal architects for the scheme, scheduled for completion in 1972, are Eugene Beaudoin, Urbain Cassan, Louis deHoyme de Marien and Jean Saubot. The consulting architects are A. Epstein and Sons, Chicago.
