designed to a very much lighter floor loading.

The original architectural design for heavy concrete fins was changed to one for light aluminium fins as the structur- al frame was a cantilever type. This overall reduction in loading along the perimeter of the floors resulted in lo- wering the cost by approximately 12 per cent.

It was anticipated that if the floor slabs could be so arranged to form a complete flat soffit ceiling, they would provide better rigidity of the structure and no compression steel would be needed in the cantilever plates, even with only a 17in. construction depth. A comparison of costs between false floor and false ceiling was made by the quantity surveyors and the former de- sign was eventually selected.
