can be adopted for use as a chapel, an exhibition hall, lecture hall, film theatre and a small music hall. Parking space for nine cars is provided at ground level beneath the wide cantilever of the first floor.
Owing to the large number of peo- ple expected to enter and leave the centre, the wear and tear rate is above any average office building. A main- tenance-free building, even at the sacri- fice of a higher initial cost, was another important requirement asked of the architect.
Externally, inert and durable mate- rials are used, such as mosaic tiles, anodised aluminium, glazed asbestos sheeting and washed granolithic.
Internally, a hard wearing vinyl flooring is used extensively. Washable vinyl sheeting is used for partition units and heavy duty vinyl sheeting covers all door surfaces. Wall tile dadoes
are taken above the height of an average person.
The extremely durable polyure- thane paints are widely used on both metal and wood surfaces. Where abras-
ion is encountered, such as on desk and counter tops and door push plates, laminated plastic sheeting is employed. Painting, in the usual practice, is kept to minimum.
Structural design
The first discussions between archi- tect and structural engineer for the Lutheran Building centred on whether it would be possible to eliminate co- lumns along the perimeter of the build- ing in order to achieve complete flexi- bility in the utilization of floor space. The answer, not untypical, was that it was possible but it would cost more money.
The structural consultant first pre- pared a full scale design based on a framing plan determined solely by architectural considerations. From the
structural drawings the quantity sur- veyors estimated the cost of the project and found that it would exceed the stipulated budget,
The architect was then faced with the problem of whether to lower the quality of the finishes or to incorporate the structural considerations but slight- ly reduce the flexibility.
The owners were persuaded to ac- cept the permanent locating of depart- ments such as library and filing, which require heavier floor loading, on one floor so that all other floors could be
