RAFFIC problems in Kowloon have more complicated in recent years so that with the rapid development of the New Territories it was necessary to have a new arterial route from the peninsula to the New Territories.
to
the The through connection Eastern New Territories will be pro- vided by the new Lion Rock Tunnel from Lung Cheung Road to Shatin, and direct communication to the Western New Territories will be made via the present Lung Cheung
Road and the new Tai Po Road Castle Peak Road Link at present under construction.
A new arterial route, however, had still to be provided along practically the whole length of the Kowloon Peninsula. The present dual carriage- way from the Chatham Road/Gas- coigne Road junction to the complex at Princess Margaret Road/Waterloo Road/Argyle Street was constructed in two sections between 1962 and 1964 as the first stage of the new highway.
There are four major road crossings on the new route of which three are at present traffic light controlled but the fourth at the Princess Margaret Road/Waterloo Road/Argyle Street complex, while designed as a free flowing rotary. so completely overloaded even under existing traffic conditions that it had to be controlled by Traffic Police at peak periods of the day.
