Reclaimed bay adjacent to power station site

ty of Aberdeen Harbour as a typhoon shelter.

The whole of the core material and some of the armouring rock for these breakwaters was supplied from the Hongkong Electric site. Two other Government projects in which the rock was used were reclamations at Sandy Bay and Wanchai. Ap Lei Chau rock was also used for a re- clamation scheme at Tsing Yi Island.

The power station at Ap Lei Chau is to be oil-fired and so it was neces- sary to provide wharfage for oil car- rying barges at the site. Transporta- tion by water is the only means of access to the site, and it was decided that the site formation contract should include the construction of a wharf wall so that this would be available for the off-loading of large pieces of equipment due for installation in the first stage of the power station.

pleted in October, 1966. is situated on the north side of the site, just in- side the western entrance to Aberdeen Harbour, and is of precast concrete blockwork construction. It is 900 ft. long and over much of this length has a dredged frontage to give a 15 ft. depth of water at low tide suf- ficient to accommodate a barge carry- ing 1,500 tons of fuel oil.

Building Construction

The site formation contract was programmed so that completion of its second stage allowed construction work for the power station buildings to commence at the beginning of 1966.

The buildings at present under construction are to house two 60 MW generating sets and associated boilers, transformers, switchgear, etc. The first of these two sets is programmed This wharf wall which was com- to go on commercial load in the

spring of 1968, and the second one year later.

The site is capable of accommodat- ing a minimum generating capacity of 840 MW and future extensions will be made eastward from the present structure to meet electrical demands within the Hongkong Electric Com- pany's area of supply.

Due to the fact that the power station is founded on solid rock, foundation design has been quite straightforward. However, as with the site formation contract, this has meant that the only economical and rapid method of carrying out excava- tion has been with the aid of ex- plosives.

The major items of excavation have been for foundations to the boiler and turbine houses, turbine block founda- tions, the cooling water intake pum- phouse, inlet and outlet cooling water culverts, and the town water reservoir.
