Rock being tipped into barge for removal to Southern Aberdeen typhoon breakwaters
Inlet and outlet culverts under construction. View from east end of culvert excavation
The boiler and turbine houses have a structural steel framework on a 27 ft. 6 in. grid, the boiler house being 192 ft. 6 in. long, 117 ft. 0 in. wide and 113 ft. clear height, and the tur- bine house 192 ft. 6 in. long, 103 ft. 0 in. wide and 88 ft. 0 in. clear height. In the design of the frame for these buildings the various loading conditions were analysed by com- puter to give data on the resultant stresses and deflections.
Ancillary buildings are all of rein- forced concrete construction. The electrical annexe is on the north side of the turbine house and contains at ground level transformer bays and on upper floors main cable runs, the control room, relay room and auxili- ary switchgear area.
At the western end of the boiler and turbine houses is the 66 kV switchgear house and office block. The northern part of this building houses the 66 kV switchgear and the southern part the main administrative offices, staff dining room, kitchen and air conditioning plant room.
In accordance with local require- ments all the structures have been designed to withstand typhoon strength winds. This has meant that the main steel framework for the boiler and turbine houses would ex- perience quite large lateral deflections (up to 41⁄2 in. at the roof level of the boiler house). Consequently it has been necessary to adopt the use of specially designed sliding joints to allow for the expected differential movements which would occur be- tween the steel framework and static plant structures within the buildings and also between the steel framework and concrete structures which are constructed against, but not integral with, some of the columns.
To leave as much space as possible at ground level available for future use the 500,000 gallon town water reservoir is to be situated under- ground at the western end of the site. Cooling water for the operational
