These are all housed in a rectan- gular ten-storey building sited at the corner of Canton Road and Public Square Street, Yau Ma Tei. Construc- tion, started in November 1965, made possible by a donation of HK$5 million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club. In addition to this sum, Government has allocated $900,000 for furniture and equipment.
A primary factor in the design of the building was the separation of patients attending the various clinics. This has been achieved by:
(a) locating the general
patients clinic on the first floor, with its own staircase from the ground floor:
out-
(b) locating the chest and social hygiene clinics on the second floor also served by their own individual staircases;
(c) serving the remainder of the clinics with two lifts, capable of carrying stretcher and
cases;
(d) providing an independent lift
for staff circulation.
On the ground floor are located the entrance hall, offices for the stewards and clerks, rooms housing the build- ing's engineering services, workshops and storage space, and car parking.
The out-patient clinic on the first floor has seven examination suites, two injection and two treatment rooms, a dispensary, a minor operat- ing theatre and two medical social workers' offices.
In the chest clinic on the second floor accommodation is provided not only for doctors and nurses, but also for medical social workers, health visitors, health auxiliaries and in- noculators for the BCG campaign.
Half the third floor is occupied by a social hygiene clinic and the re- mainder has been utilised as a chest X-ray service for the chest clinic on the floor immediately below.
