this number has recently been increas- ed by a further 900 with the comple- tion of a multi-storey structure at Rumsey Street, on the central area re- clamation.

For the design of this building, Government architects were guided by plans for a similar structure completed in 1965 in Tsimshatsui, Kowloon. Like that building the new car park is a reinforced concrete rectangular block with columns placed at 16ft. x 24ft. centres. The parking system is one of sloping floors with separate up and down traffic ramps encircling parking areas and lift banks.

An electricity substation is includ- ed in the block at street level. The Hong Kong Electric Co. had been pressing for a site in the central area and since no site was available soon enough to meet its development pro-

was con-

gramme, the substation veniently located in this building. The project thus embodies three facilities: car parking; Government offices, in- cluding a Marine Department signal tower on the roof and upper roof level; and the electricity substation. Parking floors

Parking for an actual total of 913 cars is provided on the first to eighth floors inclusive. All related ancillary accommodation, i.e. pay office, rest room and public lavatories, is at ground level. The parking floors are served by four passenger lifts and two stairways.

Some 76,760 sq. ft. of Government offices are included in the building, with 13,500 sq. ft. on the ground floor, 10,000 sq. ft. on a mezzanine level and 26,630 sq. ft. on each of the

ninth and tenth floors. The signal tower has approximately 2,000 sq. ft. on the roof and upper roof levels.

Ninth and tenth floors, which are served by four passenger lifts, one goods lift and four stairways, are air conditioned by a fan coil system, with fresh air supply to each unit through external vertical concrete fins. Separ- ate plants are provided for the mez- zanine and upper roof levels. These floors are served by four passenger lifts, one goods lift and four stairways.

The electric company's substation consists of a transformer house of 3,600 sq. ft. at ground floor level, but due to height requirements takes up the same area through the mezzanine floor. The switchgear occupies an area of 1,800 sq. ft. on the ground floor and the control an area of similar size on the mezzanine floor.
