The roof structure is designed for helicopter landings, lighting around the landing pad being controlled inside the signal tower.

Preconsolidation

The site, being on a newly reclaim- ed area, was a difficult one to develop with a building of such weight. A thick layer of boulder fill and marine de-

posit to 40 ft. below existing ground level overlay a comparatively hard strata of decomposed granite.

Serious problems were encountered during piling for the foundation and eventually a method of preconsolida- tion was adopted. The ground at the tion was adopted. The ground at the position of the piles was compacted by a heavy hammer and then filled with selected soil prior to forming of piles.

Some of the piles were as long as 110 ft.

Special precautions also had to be taken not to damage an existing sea- wall on the east side of the building. The distance between the pile cap and the sea wall was restricted to be not less that 30 ft.

The external treatment of the building comprises white shanghai plaster on the structural members and dark brown asbestos cement board for the spandrils. Internal walls and ceil- ings are finished with lime plaster, while cement paint is applied to the fair-face concrete on all the parking floors.
