than inside where one is rather over- whelmed by the richness and darkness of the materials and the quantity of teak.

The top deck has great potential for people as well as for cars and it seems a pity that more use was not made of it. For quite a small outlay some- thing could have been done, for ex- ample, to make it more like the pro- menade deck of the ships on to which one can look. Some sort of lounge or just a sitting area could have been provided at the end of the top deck so that full advantage could be taken of the fine views over the harbour.

The pedestrian approach to the building is attractive, day and night. Potentially a somewhat barren strip has been saved by small touches such as a group of flagpoles and a shiny sculpture which flanks it on the land- ward side.

For the terminal to attract residents as well as tourists much depends on the quality of the shops and their dis- plays. The tenants have been very much controlled as regards the de- coration of their shopfronts and the lettering and probably it is asking too much that more control should be ap- plied. In the great majority of cases the shops provide bright and interest- ing interiors yet there is one shop, that has panelled itself throughout in imitation-wood plastic laminate and

applied acoustic tiles to the ceiling. which gives a very dreary effect.

The restraint of the interior design means that things can be placed with in the building as individual features without being discordant with the overall design.

For example, there is an 'open' re- staurant above the concourse which. although fussy in its detail, is good in providing variety. The restaurant at the end of the Terminal Hong

Kong's biggest also brings an ah- rupt change of environment.

The music playing over the loud- speakers, the comfortable chairs, and many other touches. help to provide an atmosphere to relax in. Perhaps there should be more of a holiday at- mosphere: gaiety always encourages people to spend their money and to come again. Restraint may be good for the image of the owners but may not be best for business.
