are being finalised for the construction of a new racecourse complex at Ipoh, capital of Perak State, and tenders are expected to be invited for the work in November this year.
The new complex was the subject of an international design competition held last year by the Perak Turf Club and won by the Australian firm. Joyce, Nankivell, Watson Associates. The win carried a prize of £4,000 sterling.
Perak is one of the three authorised racecourses in Malaysia, where all betting is by Totalisator and there are no S.P. bookmakers. Racing occurs at the three courses in sequence and cach must provide its own off-course betting facilities on its own no-race days.
Owners and trainers require full training facilities at each racecourse and the permanent stabling of horses makes it necessary for staff and large numbers of stable boys and labourers, many with families, to be housed nearby. As attendances increase and more buildings are added, the layout of each course tends to become in- creasingly inefficient and ramified.
Last year the Perak Turf Club decided to demolish and completely rebuild its existing facilities, including the grandstand and all ancillary

master plan which would enable rebuilding to take place over a period of three years, and was designed to cause the minimum of inconvenience to racegoers.
Grandstand
The grandstand accommodates 6,000 people, and is capable of future extension. It was decided to link the two major spectator functions of viewing and betting, with a concourse running the full length of the grand- stand at all levels.
This was made sufficiently wide to allow for large numbers of people to circulate, both along the length of the building and across it. Contained in this artery are the main vertical cir- culation systems, stairs, lifts and

escalators, and other service facilities such as mechanical plant, lavatories and stores.
On the side of the concourse away from the track at ground level, are the entrance foyers. administrative offices. restaurants and some bar facilities. Above on the first floor is the main tote hall. On the track side of the concourse are the main specta- tor seating and standing areas, ramped from the first floor concourse level to the viewing lawns in front.
The second floor concourse level leads to VIP boxes. committee rooms, broadcasting areas, etc. The winning post is the main point of interest on the viewing side of the stand and around this, VIP's and members seating has been grouped.
